I am delighted to tell you that Danny Kirkham has been appointed our new Head Coach and will start with the Club on Monday 9th July.
When Cameron told us he was going to stand down he recommended Danny as a candidate having been team mates training together for many years with the ELST and Edinburgh University performance squads.
On sharing with you the précis below of Danny’s swimming background I am sure you will all agree it makes formidable reading and after advertising and due consideration there was no question he was the ideal person out there to take the Club to the next level.
Danny started swimming lessons at Musselburgh Sport Centre with East Lothian Council at the age of four and by the time he was seven had joined Musselburgh Marlins where he continued to swim and compete for the Club until he was eleven.
At that stage he was invited to join the East Lothian Swim Team development pathway and shortly after that started training as a full time squad member in 2006.
He continued swimming as a member with Musselburgh and ELST for 10 years before moving on to Edinburgh University’s performance swim programme.
Danny represented Musselburgh at County and National level competing at the British National Championships as well as several European Championships in France, Germany, Portugal and Spain.
Whilst studying for his Honours Degree in Sport Science Danny, in addition to his swimming commitments, coached over this period on a voluntary basis at the Musselburgh, Haddington and Tranent swimming clubs.
Last year he finally decided to retire from swimming to concentrate on coaching and since then he has been very successful at Warrender coaching the top age group squads.
With many of our Coaching Team already knowing Danny well they were delighted as we all were that he has chosen to return to his roots as our Head Coach.
He and his family have been associated with Musselburgh Marlins for many years with both his Dad and Uncle members of the committee and both have been Club Secretary.
I know that Danny’s ambition was that one day he would get the opportunity to take on the role of Head Coach at Musselburgh Marlins and I believe his appointment will result in further significant development and success for the Club.
Danny over the next three weeks will be on the poolside for some of the sessions to get to know the kids and with backstroke his forte I am certain there will soon be a crop of youngsters very keen to emulate him.
