MUSSELBURGH Marlins trio Dylan Bleakley, Sam Downie and Neil Ferguson claimed a stunning 14 medals at the GB National Junior Para-Swimming Championships in Liverpool.
Part of the 12-strong junior Scottish team, the boys took on the top para-juniors in Great Britain and did not disappoint – taking home medals in all but two of their swims.
Bleakley competing in the 16 years’ S14 classification, won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, gold in the 100m butterfly, silver in the 100m backstroke, bronze in the 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m individual medley.
In the 13 years’ S9/S8 classification, Downie claimed silver in the 100m backstroke, silver in the 100m breaststroke, silver in the 100m and 400m freestyle and bronze in the 50m freestyle.
Ferguson, competing in the S7 classification in the 17 years’ age group won gold in the 50m and 100m freestyle.
Jack Calder, chairman of Musselburgh Marlins, said “With also many personal best times over the weekend, this was by any standard a great achievement by the boys, who well deserved their success due to their enthusiasm and hard work due to the commitment to their training in the run-up to the championships. Huge credit must also be given to their coaches at Musselburgh Marlins, Lothian Racers and East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) for their tremendous support in encouraging and motivating them during their training sessions.”
In recognition of their success at Liverpool, the county trio have been invited to swim at the British Para-Swimming International Meet/WPS World Series 2019 from April 25 to 28 at Tollcross ISC in Glasgow, which will provide an opportunity for them to compete and gain further experience at the International level against the elite in para-swimming.
