Our Coaching Programme

Training Structure

Musselburgh ASC benefits from a structured training program, used to get the very best from swimmers as they progress through the club. Swimmers are split into squads: Entry, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Senior Gold. This squad structure helps coaches to implement the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model, the principles of which are strongly endorsed by British Swimming. The LTAD model will be used to optimize coaching and to provide the best training environment for the development of individual swimmers.

Squad by Squad look at Training Structure

Entry Squad – LTAD level: FUNdamentals/SwimSkills

This squad aims to introduce swimmers to club level swimming, to progress and build on skills and techniques developed in ‘learn to swim’ lessons, across all 4 strokes. In addition, this level will also aim to be enjoyable and fun with a large emphasis on building generic movement skills across a range of swimming aspects. Swimmers will also try competitive swimming for the first time.

The main goal for swimmers in this squad will be to develop stroke technique and to achieve criteria for progression into a new squad.

Bronze Squad – LTAD level: SwimSkills

This squad aims to further improve technique across all 4 strokes and skills developed in Entry Squad. Furthermore, it aims for swimmers to get more experience in the competitive side of swimming. A closer focus on race skills will also be looked at and developed in this squad. Swimmers will be encouraged to compete, but training and technique development is the focus. Participants will also start to develop a greater understanding of lane discipline and how to train in a structured environment.

The main goals for swimmers in this squad will be further development of stroke technique and improvement of race skills (turns, dives, finishes) to progress into the Silver Squad.

Silver Squad – LTAD level: SwimSkills/TrainingToTrain

This squad aims to continue to develop technique and skills across all 4 strokes developed in Bronze Squad. It will also begin to introduce the physical and physiological development associated with swimming (e.g. aerobic endurance, core strength). Therefore, swimmers in this squad need to be able to cope with an increased training load as well an increase in volume whilst maintaining a high skill level.

Swimmers in this squad will aim to develop their endurance base whilst maintaining the proper technique and skills already developed in earlier squads. The focus will still be training and technical development, but swimmers will also compete regularly.

Gold & Senior Gold Squads – LTAD level: TrainingToTrain

These squads aim to refine good technique and skills across all 4 strokes. It will continue the physical development associated with swimming (e.g. aerobic endurance, core strength) and the training program will be more physically challenging to build the swimmers engine ready for progression on to further stages of the LTAD pathway.

Training goals will be set for swimmers. The focus will still be training and technical development rather than competition, but swimmers will compete regularly. Swimmers in these squads will be looking to continue and build on the work completed in Silver Squad with an aim of preparing to progress to TrainingToCompete.
